Tupac Amaru Shakur was born to be a star, a revolutionary, a social activist, an advocate for positive action and change. His light shone and burned brighter (and therefore faster) than any other rapper within his generation. His burgeoning talent and sometimes combustible disposition was tempered by his philanthropic soul and magnanimous heart. An actor by definition, his rap persona was at times exactly that, a veneer, a violent caricature of every thug with a more righteous cause than slinging, smoking drinking and fucking.
Tupac was dangerous. He was a young American black man with a brain, awoken by injustice and double standards. He was fuelled by the knowledge that people were being oppressed and manipulated by greedy forces. His opposition to these malevolent influences (and his subsequent insurrection) wasn’t his ultimate undoing. No. His mistake was to become entangled in the poisonous, iniquitous, avaricious, predatory web of Suge Knight and the aptly named ‘Death Row’ record label. To Knight, Tupac became an uncontrollable problem and a danger to his maleficent empire. Tupac was unorthodox, unconventional, and of course, entirely irreverent because of this. A born showman who also had a genuine connection with the common man; forever the peoples champion, he is still a hero in Oakland. The man cared little for the constructs imposed upon him, for he saw them for what they were; utter fallacy. His goal was to change, re-educate and unite. I challenge you to find an interview in which he exclusively speaks about his music, if he ever does he usually veers off into a tangential stream of conjecture about something closer to his heart Tupac Amaru Shakur; philanthropist, philosopher, revolutionary, poet, hero, auteur and inspiration. Gone, but never forgotten; immortalised.

Change, despite its many disagreeable elements, abets improvement, refinement. It forces humans to adapt and seek solutions.
Thanks to technology there is nearly nothing we can’t overcome. Snow? Work from home, fuck it work from home altogether, saves the need for office space and minimizes the companies’ liabilities and losses all round. A member, or several members of your family are scattered across the globe. No problem; Skype for face to face conversation, and Facebook for unlimited photographs. Cash rich and time poor, unable to find the time to get to the shops for food or for clothing? Order from home. In fact you needn’t ever build even the smallest personal relationship with another human being again. After all we won’t miss it, will we? The small, seemingly insignificant moments of contact that take place between the shop assistant and the consumer, the bus driver and the patron, the office’s annual Christmas party, let’s sweep them away.
The warmth is unnecessary, just another layer that we need to remove for monetary gain’ (less staff to pay for an entirely online based shop) and convenience (you needn’t make an intimate or jovial phone call ever again now that you have Blackberry Messenger).
This is the future, and you’re welcome to it.

To call this a quote what be to undersell it criminally. This is a life altering statement that should be broadcasted daily for the next one hundred years, and then it should be written into law. Its message is more pertinent than ever. I’ve paraphrased the mid section in order for it relate to the youth of today. Idols are often painted as ‘preparation for the Anti-Christ, they are not. But they represent something equally as dangerous.

I don’t feel I could adequately add to this near perfect summation of the world we live in today. What I can, and must attempt to do is offer a solution. And in time I hope to. I am extremely ambitious in my plan, but thats the trick, to overshoot, for if you fall short you have still achieved something. A cataclysmic shift in thought process and perception needs to come about in the majority of the humans who inhabit this planet.

I wrote this in the back of my Uncle’s beat up old Nissan* as we drove cross state from California to Nevada, two years ago. The words still resonate as powerfully with me now, as they did then.

“Never censor yourself and or create a persona or image which exists purely to cater to the wants and needs of what you may define as an audience. Do not think you will compromise your commercial viability or alienate people by being true to yourself. Acceptance is not paramount. Popularity and its trappings should not validate nor be central to your existence.”

I called this saying ‘Freedom Beckons’. I don’t really know why.

That was a pretty good holiday (in parts).
